As the cold weather arrives, we know that mammals like bears go into hibernation, birds migrate to other places to survive, and we humans enjoy a cup of coffee while in a fireplace inside our home. But how about pest? How do they survive in the winter months? Many believes that they just die off, but in fact they have different strategies to survive in the harsh weather.
Ants
Ants indulge in vast amounts of food with the goal of putting on fat to survive for weeks on end without eating. And when the winter chill arrives, they seal up the colony reducing productivity and their body temperature.
Bed bugs
Bed bugs can resist temperatures from nearly freezing to 50 degrees Celsius. Our homes provide the perfect habitat for bed bugs to survive during the winter months.
Cockroaches
Depending on the specie, cockroaches have different way to survive the winter months. For example the German cockroach prefers an indoor humid habitat close to food and moisture sources. By that, they make them selves comfy into our kitchens and bathrooms. The American cockroach, on the other hand, prefers to live outdoors in warmer climate.
Termites
Termites have different survival skills dealing with the winter season depending on species. Subterranean termites will dig deeper into the ground to stay warm. Other species like drywood termites will seek out dry wood for shelter.
